Dental Crowns
Crowns are a cosmetic restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially destroyed by tooth decay.

Crowns are "cemented" onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth's new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong.
Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling. Unlike fillings which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth. Your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed.
Same Day Crowns
Here at our office, we use CEREC® same day crowns which enables us to restore decayed teeth, remove old amalgam fillings, place new crowns or cosmetic veneers in just one appointment. This allows us you as our patient to have a restorative procedure completed in one appointment visit. Heres how it works.
Preparation
After the initial exam, we decide on what the appropriate treatment is for your tooth in question is. We then cleans the tooth and prepares it for the restoration.

Imaging
We will then take an image of the tooth. To get an impression without using CEREC®, a dentist will usually have the patient bite down into a tray filled with “goop” and hold the tray until the substance hardens. But with us, this process is simplified and non-goopy. The dentist simply brushes the tooth with a non-toxic, tasteless powder. Then with a camera, approximately the size of a pen, is used to take a digital image of the tooth. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.

Creation
After the imaging is complete, our CEREC® machine turns the image into a virtual model of the replacement tooth. After inspecting for proper fit, the image is sent to a separate milling machine that will create the tooth. This process usually take between 20 and 30 minutes.
